We were incredibly fortunate to meet Floyd Hamblen when we purchased an old lake house in Wisconsin and entrusted him with designing our dream home. Today, the original rendering of his design is framed on our wall, a constant reminder of his talent and vision.

Working with Floyd Hamblen to get our house designed and built was a pleasure. We gave him a broad idea of what we were looking for and he made it come to life far nicer than we even imagined. We found him to be thoughtful, creative, and very easy to work with. The house is beautiful to look at from the outside; it fits in with the surrounding land wonderfully. Working with Floyd Hamblen on our house design was an incredibly rewarding experience. From the beginning, Floyd took the time to truly listen to us and understand our hopes and vision for the space. Floyd’s dedication to the site and the design was evident. He visited our property several times to ensure that the final design would truly fit the land, and the result was a home that feels like it’s meant to be there. Even now, we continue to discover serendipitous elements of the design that bring us joy. For example, we love how in the mornings, the sun warms our backs while we sit at the breakfast bar – a small but perfect detail that only happens in the cooler months. The natural light in the home also creates stunning effects, highlighting the stone and woodwork in ways we continue to appreciate.
We also love Floyd’s sayings that have become part of the language of our home, such as his reminder that “the house is the artwork,” and his belief that the use of natural materials adds authenticity to the design. These guiding principles gave our home a sense of purpose and connection to its surroundings.
Despite being a small house, it feels both spacious and cozy, a remarkable balance that Floyd helped us achieve. Throughout the entire process, he was always available to offer advice, whether through site visits, sketches, or just a quick phone call. His ongoing support – both before and after construction – has been invaluable.
Not a week goes by without us marveling at how lucky we are to live in this beautiful space. We are deeply grateful for Floyd’s thoughtful and creative approach to our project, and we’re thrilled with the home he helped us create.

His masterful use of glass and stone not only complements the existing architecture but also creates a seamless connection to the outdoors. Floyd is a true artist, and he created our home as an innovative sculpture. It incorporates and mirrors the environment surrounding it. The diverse use of windows not only highlights interesting views of the landscape, but also provides a varied treatment of sunlight which changes how our home looks and feels both through the day and through the seasons. We’ve been in the home for years now, and yet we are still discovering new favorite angles, favorite spots, favorite features. Our home was created to be uniquely ours, and living in it is a true joy.
Floyd listened to us. He didn’t just design a structure, but spent a great deal of time learning who we are and how we would use it. He then took our incomplete ideas and dreams and after several evolutions, came up with a hexagonally-inspired plan that provides a distinctive and varied feel, functionally tailored to us and to our lifestyle. The process with Floyd is one of exploration and problem solving, and he is the kindest, most supportive, and helpful partner we could ever have hoped for.
Throughout the construction and the innumerable challenges with our builder, Floyd re-thought and re-designed to make it all work out. We are also thrilled to have learned how ahead of his time Floyd was in designing for energy efficiency and reducing our bills.
Floyd Hamblen is a creative genius, and truly the nicest man in the world to work with. We absolutely love his inspiration and imagination, his design process, and our home.
