Keane Residence

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Situated on a narrow lot along Nagawicka Lake west of Milwaukee, this home is a dramatic remodel that bears almost no resemblance to the original structure. By extending the lake end of the house—while respecting setback restrictions—the design captures an expansive view. Unlike typical lakeside homes with tunnel-vision perspectives of their narrow section of lakeshore, the living room is angled 45° off the property's main axis, revealing an unobstructed panorama across multiple shorelines. A central open stairwell shaft connects four floors, creating a natural air convection system that cools the house by drawing cool basement air upward when doors and windows are strategically opened. A stone mass rises through the upper three levels, featuring wood-burning fireplaces on each floor, while a small office belvedere on the highest level offers sweeping views in all directions. Despite the neighboring houses' proximity, the interior feels remarkably secluded and spacious.
