Sherwood Residence
Rockbridge, Wisconsin
The genesis of this home lies in a humble beginning: a 12' x 12' viewing platform where the owners would gather for picnics, enjoying the sweeping valley vistas below. This favorite spot became more than just inspiration—it became the anchor point of the home's design, now transformed into the heart of the kitchen where original views remain preserved.

From this anchoring point, the living room pivots outward in a move that both captures and frames an even more dramatic panorama of the landscape. The room's vaulted ceiling and gable lines were carefully calibrated to echo a not-so-distant butte that punctuates the valley's end, creating a dialogue between architecture and topography. This alignment brings the distant landscape into the daily experience of the home's inhabitants.
The architect custom-designed built-ins, cabinetry, and entry door were conceived as architectural elements, integrating with the home's overall composition. The pivoted orientation of the structure carved out an intimate outdoor sanctuary between the hillside and the building's edge. This protected space serves as a natural extension of the interior living areas, offering a more contained counterpoint to the expansive valley views and creating a multi-layered living experience that unfolds from intimate to infinite.
