Soderstrom Residence

Unbuilt design for Peoria, Illinois

The Soderstrom Residence bridges two distinct contexts: a traditional suburban neighborhood and an expansive family estate. Situated on a unique lot that backs onto the client's father's property, the design thoughtfully responds to both its immediate suburban setting and the pastoral landscape beyond.

  • From the street, the home presents a welcoming façade, distinguished by dramatic overhanging rooflines and laid out on hexagonal grid pattern. This geometric language sets it apart from neighboring properties while maintaining a harmonious street presence. The thoughtful positioning of the kitchen between the garage and entry creates a natural observation point, allowing occupants to monitor both the street approach and, through the opposite side, survey the rear garden over a sunken living room through expansive windows.

The home's internal circulation follows a carefully choreographed sequence of level changes. From the ground-level entry, one can either descend a few steps into the sunken living room or ascend to the children's wing, which features a balcony overlooking the living room. The master suite is perched at the highest level, just a few steps above from the children’s rooms above the kitchen and dining area, creating a private retreat with commanding views.

A notable feature of the residence is its professional recording studio wing, designed in collaboration with acclaimed recording studio designer Wes Lachot. This specialized space seamlessly integrates with the residential program while maintaining the acoustic isolation necessary for professional recording.

The design successfully achieves its dual objectives: fitting comfortably within its suburban context while maximizing its connection to the adjacent family estate, creating a home that is both neighborhood-appropriate and uniquely tailored to its owners' needs.
