Hochstettler Residence

Crooked Lake, Indiana

Perched on the shores of Crooked Lake, this contemporary residence transforms a challenging site into a dynamic living experience. The narrow lot, hemmed in by neighboring houses and marked by a dramatic grade change from street to shoreline, inspired an architectural response that celebrates these constraints.

  • The design solution emerges as a cascade of simply articulated cubic volumes that step down toward the water, each responding to both the site's constraints and the desire for a closer connection with the lake. Careful excavation of the previous structure required special engineering to preserve the structural integrity of adjacent properties, setting the stage for this architectural intervention.

The composition reveals itself through interconnected geometric forms that flow from street level to a lakeside boathouse. Each element serves multiple functions: the boathouse roof doubles as an elevated waterfront terrace, while a cantilevered concrete balcony extends from the upper-level living room to provide shade below. Retaining walls transcend their utilitarian purpose, becoming sculptural elements that define a sequence of outdoor gathering spaces. This choreographed manipulation of grade creates a cascade of social areas, each offering distinct perspectives of the lake environment.

The corners of the lakeside living areas have a carefully articulated series of small stacked operable windows to wrap around the space giving an expansive panorama of the lake and providing fresh air into the space.

Moving away from the conventional approach of viewing the lake from a removed, elevated position, the design strategically positions living spaces at various elevations, allowing inhabitants to experience the water's edge more intimately. The result is a home that doesn't merely observe its environment but encourages you to engage with it.
